California Market Squid | First Delivery Of The Season

The first squid of the season stirred quite a bit of ruckus in Ventura Harbor this morning. The Ocean Angel III brought in about 20 tons of beautiful little Loligo. However, the thrill quickly subsided when the pumps started rolling out 19 count squid, which means it takes 19 squid to equal one pound. Basically, the squid are too small to bring in a decent price.

The squid season opened April 1st and typically deliveries start around the middle of May. The big concern this season is that the water temps are all wrong for a productive season. In general, there is a lot of apprehension this year. The squid fishery has a recent trend of highly productive seasons, where the quota was easily caught before the end of the year. In fact the first time the quota was ever caught was in 2010 and it's been easily mopped up every season since. The season still has a long way to go, but it's nice to see a start to squid seining.

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | F/V Erin Carroll

Yes, that is the Pacific Pursuit! The name just changed this spring to the F/V Erin Carroll. This vessel is one of the nicer super seiners in the California fleet. The tophouse is completely surrounded in glass, offering some of the best wrap around visibility of any vessel. The rest of the boat is just as flawless and the drum seine smoothes out the entire operation. Local commercial fishermen are preparing their boats for the 2015 squid season which opened on April 1st. No squid deliveries have been made as of yet. However, last year's delivery was around the end of May. So, let's hope that squid is just around the corner.

Commercial Fishing Video Of The Day | Ventura Harbor Parade Of Lights 2014

Check out this years incredible Parade of Lights in Ventura Harbor this Christmas. The entire harbor village comes together for this cheerful holiday tradition. I know this has been attempted in Alaska, as well. However, we rarely have the pleasant weather that Ventura County does. Anyways, it looks like a ton of fun!

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | F/V Ocean Angel 3 | X Mas Edition

Every Christmas, Ventura Harbor lights up the local harbor with a fantastic parade of lights. Here's a shot of the squid seiner the Ocean Angel III before the big parade. It's a shame, I missed the event by one weekend. I've been so busy traveling and visiting friends for the holidays that I haven't had much internet time. Have yourself a Merry Christmas!

Commercial Fishing Video Of The Day | Cali Loligo 2014

This is my most recent video from my squid fishing adventure in California. The edit doesn't have too much crew footage, but I have a ton of GoPro 4 data to play around with for another crew remix. The video was shot and edited completely on the iPhone 6 with the new Replay App that was showcased at Macworld this fall. Make sure to wait for the HD To buffer. The lighting effects are best viewed under 1080.

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | F/V Aleutian Spirit | Squid 2014

The squid season is California is wrapping up after another banner year. This would the the 5th consecutive year that the entire quota of 118,000 tons has been caught early. Even with the El Niño trends, squid still seems to be thriving in the waters off of Caifornia. Here's a nice panorama shot as we were crusing off of Mugu Canyon.

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | Ventura Harbor Panorama

The harbor in Ventura, California is a real treat for any weary fishermen who has been stuck in too many dismal rainy ports of call. The beauty of Ventura Harbor is the touristy village that bustles with numerous restuarants, bars, and retail stores. The massive harbor is a nice mix of pleasure craft and commercial fishing boats. Did I mention that it's minutes away from surfing? Ventura Harbor is a fishermen's dream come true. If you are ever in the area, make sure to check it out.
