It almost that time again. I’m excited about this summer. I just hope the high diesel prices don’t destroy us in the long run.
JUNEAU, Alaska — The statewide commercial salmon harvest for this year has been estimated at 203 million salmon of all species.
The Department of Fish and Game says that would make it the fifth largest total harvest and fourth highest for pink salmon since Alaska took over management of its fisheries in 1960.
The agency says excellent harvests also are expected statewide for sockeye and chum salmon.
The agency says the harvest forecast is for 45.1 million sockeye, 4.7 million coho, 133.7 million pink and 19.2 million chums.
The forecast for king salmon is not yet available. It is expected to be released by the Pacific Salmon Commission in late March or early April.
